Welcome to our 30th edition of Velasco Chronicle & Buzz.
Happy New Year! Today, look back on all you've accomplished in the past year, and look forward to what's in store for the new year. This is a great day to write down some personal goals for the year and take some time to plan on keeping motivated throughout the year. The month of January begins the start of the New Year and the time to make New Years resolutions for 2022. It is also the first of seven months to have a length of 31 days. As we step into 2022, it is a time for looking forward and wishing for a good year ahead.
January was named for the Roman god Janus, known as the protector of gates and doorways who symbolize beginnings and endings. Janus is depicted with two faces, one looking into the past, the other with the ability to see into the future. What a fitting symbol for this first day of the year; this month is our door into the new year. The Romans often made promises to Janus and exchanged good wishes.
This month we also observe the life of Martin Luther King Jr. This holiday is held on the third Monday in January and honors the principles of this civil rights leader and Nobel Prize Winner dedicated to nonviolence. MKL Day has been a federal holiday since 1986 and this year it falls on January 17.
Americans are often encouraged to observe this day not simply as a day off from work, but also as a “Day of Service” to others through appropriate civic, community, and service projects.
Think of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as an opportunity to give to others in any way you can—whether it’s a community project or simply being kind to others in your community.
The New Year is 365 days of new beginnings that are on the horizon. 2022 is here and is going to be a big year for all of us.
