Welcome to our 34th edition of Velasco Chronicle & Buzz.
Celebrate the gorgeous month of May! The sun is warming, the birds are chirping, the flowers are blooming, and we are just one month away from summer! May is the fifth month of the year and also a month of many good things: flowers, beauty and celebrations including Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day, and Memorial Day just to name a few.
Cinco de Mayo celebrated each year on the fifth day of May, commemorates the Mexican victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla and overtime it has evolved into a day of celebrating Mexican culture and heritage through festivals, food, drinks, and parades. More than being an excuse to treat oneself to nachos, tacos, mezcal and margaritas, Cinco de Mayo serves as a day to appreciate and celebrate the Mexican culture.
Mom's are truly superheroes, so it's only fair that we have a whole day dedicated to them. The holiday is on a different date each year and this year Mother's Day falls on Sunday, May 8. Whether you surprise mom with breakfast in bed or a thoughtful gift, Mother's Day is all about celebrating moms, stepmoms, grandmas or other mother figures everywhere. However you decide to celebrate, whether with cards, gifts, or flowers, there is no wrong way to shower mom with love.
With so much to celebrate in the beginning of the month, we end the month of May celebrating Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed on the last Monday in May, this year being observed on May 30. It honors those who died serving in the United States military and Memorial Day weekend kicks off the start of the summer season. While paying respects to those who have served, many spend the day with family and friends hosting a BBQ or attend a Memorial Day Event. However you chose to spend your day, don't forget to spend a moment of silence in remembrance of those fallen soldiers and a moment to thank the veterans that served.
